Eastern NE KS | Breeding heifers should be feed differently from a steer on "free choice corn and pellets". Your dairy heifer development experience (if any) is closer to the right thing than your fatting a steer plan.
My replacement heifers eat free choice prairie hay plus 4-5 lbs of 18% crude protein supplement corn, gluten and DDGS. I watch their condition and back off supplement if they getting fleshy or green forage covers their needs.
