Pittsburg, Kansas | Per the information in your link, we do put paper filters in our portafilter when we make espresso. Not particularly for the reason he states about filter coffee but it keeps the shower head cleaner. Without the paper filters (occasionally we forget) it makes a little more robust espresso as there are more dissolved coffee in some larger particles that pass through the filter head. (one filter on top of the coffee to keep the shower head clean and another under the coffee to filter it as it leaves the portafilter).
Another interesting twist, we rarely drink espresso. We make espresso then turn it into regular coffee by adding more hot water. I will taste the espresso straight some times, but I like volume over intensity. :-)
Dr Alo relies an awfully lot on epidemiology studies which can't determine causation. A LOT of confounding variables. They try to adjust for it but so much depends on the interpretation of the researchers doing the correcting.
I find it amusing when he trashes other doctors or "influencers" and yet he himself seems just as guilty of the transgressions that he accuses others of. I had a brother in law many years ago that used to rail against other people and how stupid they were because of such and such. And I as a young kid am standing there thinking (but not saying) "but you do all those things yourself". Whatever. Life goes on. I suppose we are all guilty of that to some degree. We see the faults in others while ignoring our own. Maybe that is why I rarely look in a mirror. :-)
Like the old song says, "it's hard to be humble when your perfect in every way". LOL
