SW OH | I didn't say it was horrible. My point was there is better out there. We used Rotella for years with a 250 hour and 5,000 mile interval. The owners wanted to cut costs and maximize profit. The oldest wanted to go to 500 and 15,000 around 2015 knowing industry standards were always increasing intervals. We had a meeting with SOPUS engineers and asked about going to 500 and 15,000. They told us that 500 and 10,000 was fine, but don't any longer than that, the oil won't last any longer. After several meetings with Caterpillar (Exxon makes thier oil) and Castrol they both told us 1,000 and 25,000 would be no problem. Castrol came with sample data with hours ranging from 1,100 to 1,500 that had passing numbers.
We ended up with Caterpillar oil (Exxon) and got a price lock a little cheaper than we were paying for Rotella. When we switched newer engines went to 500, and we have some at 750 currently. We always have 1 here and there that does not get the meter readings reported and goes way over due. I know we had an QSK in a drag tractor that went 42,000 miles. There is a handful of hourly engines that have gone over 1,000 hours. They have all come back with good samples. Wear metals over all have gotten better with the CAT oil over the Rotella. 500 hour samples with CAT oil look better than 250 hour samples from Rotella. These results are based on around 2,200 engines that get sampled with every change that amounts to about 15,000 gallons of engine oil and 40,000 total oil a year. I've been doing this for 25 years now. I don't care what kind of oil anybody uses, I'm just trying to share my knowledge. When an engineer tells me not to push his oil past 500, and 2 others tell me 1,000 is no problem, with data to back it up, then my own sample results back up the same data, it tells me Rotella is not the best oil out there.
