When the light comes on pull off the pos cable on the battery and see if it stalls. If it stalls it's not working.
Not a good test because of potential damage to ECM or other modules because of possible voltage spikes, because a good alternator can put out up to 14-15 volts. The battery acts as a buffer between the alternator and electrical components evening out the voltage. Also a car can run on as little as 11 or so volts, which a failing alternator could put out, but when load is added is insufficient to maintain the battery. |
