Hillsboro, TN | I have both a '05 Expedition and '05 F350. Expedition has the 5.4L Triton and the F350 has the 6.0L Powerstroke.
A couple years ago I replaced the alternator on the Expedition. After doing so the battery/ voltage light on the dash stays on most of the time. Every now and then it'll go off for a min or two or five but comes back on. The hand on the actual gage always shows that it's charging like it should be. After replacing the alternator I was told or read somewhere that the aftermarket alternators were missing a diode of some kind that allows the battery light to stay on. Is this true? Are there some aftermarket replacements that will cause the light on the dash to stay on? Is the only cure for this to go with a Motorcraft alternator to prevent this? Does this just effect the gas burner or could also be the diesels too?
I ask because the alternator on the F350 is on the fritz. Battery light on, and programmer reads battery voltage to be 6-8.5 V. When i started it the other day, I had to start it with a jumper box. The windows would barely roll and the wipers were very slow. I don't want to replace it with a parts store alternator if it's going to allow the dash light to stay on.
Any suggestions? Specific aftermarket replacement or go with Motorcraft replacement? | |
