Subject: RE: hog loadout

Latimer, Iowa (north central)
Pictures and some explaining.

Pic 1. Side view from outside. Cull chute for loading goosenecks on side and ramp is nice to walk up. This is also office entrance, nice to have a little roof over the door for when it’s raining out to unlock door.

2. Outside view of chute. We have plywood doors that can be set in to close off completely when loading.

3 just driving up to chute. Concrete retaining walls in truck area.

4. At this site, to raise the back of the truck higher we built a custom aluminum ramp we set in. 10 inches high that I set in before loading. Gets truck rear higher to lower ramp angle inside trailer.

5. Load alley in barn. 40 inches wide. Pigs don’t jam at this width but can turn around. They run onto truck quite well in groups of 5-7 and can touch all the pigs ahead of you to pursuade if needed.

6 transition from regular alley to loadout alley. 45 degrees the corner of the end pens to make corner wider. Make sure to have plenty of light in entire area.

7. Regular alley. 28” wide. Pigs can pass if they really try but hard for them to turn around in. We have solid concrete walls in entire barn so pigs don’t get distracted when going down the alley. 36” tall concrete walls.

Our oldest site is 1995 and we have never replaced any penning. It’s concrete and fiberglass faced plywood with chew guards for gates. This site was built in 2006 and everything is original. Do as much concrete and stainless as you can. If I was building a new site I would do 30 inch main alley. Seems they keep growing pigs bigger. Our oldest site is 24” main alley and it’s a little harder to get pigs out of pens with a smaller opening for them to get into. At 260 pound pigs they will jam in the 24”. At 300 lbs pigs it actually works better again as they are too big to jam. When we built it pigs were generally 240 or so. They 28 inch works fine, pluses and minuses to widths.
