Floyd County, Iowa | I used to ice fish all the time on lakes, but never on a river. Usually drove out on the ice, but used caution. If there wasn't anyone else out there, walked out and drilled holes along the way to check thickness before driving out.
The lake ice is generally more stable and consistent. River ice "morphs" from currents. I have seen where lake ice was affected by aerators and springs. Would never drive out on a river, and not so sure I'd walk out on one, unless there was a group of guys out there already. | |
