The way it was explained to me. 

Older versions of QB, like 2020 and older you can continue to use forever without updates and see all your old data.

Newer versions of QB, like 2024 (which I have) you can continue to use but you will not have access to any data older than two years. With both old and new payroll isn't possible without a yearly subscription. 

I'm not sure where the cutoff years between 220 and 2024 are so those years between would fit in one or the other category. And I don't know how they can keep you from seeing your data older than 2 years on the newer versions since it is stored on you own computer. But that is what I was told
