Yea, I kind of thought Missouri didn't require work comp. 
I would think your circumstance with the pilot would be a contract hire, not an employee. You probably sent him a 1099 at the end of the year? Only an employee that you withheld from and gave a W-2 would even be eligible for a work comp claim.
