You had "high hopes of helping others". Bringing your idea/invention to fruition is not the only way you can help others, there are opportunities to do that every day. Not to be blunt here, but you can mope around about the bad things that have happened to you, or you can make a plan and work your butt off to make your dream happen. If you don't have the heart for that, it's time to move on
