| I feed out some Holstein steers every year on ground eared and shelled corn mixed with protein pellets mixed in along with free choice of hay' I start them out at about 400 lbs and feed them about 5 lbs of grain a day and work them up over a couple months where they are leaving feed in the bunk. That happens when the average about 30 lbs a day of grain a piece. Then I switch them over to a steer suffer where they can eat when ever they want. The only thing I have ran into is they would start sorting out the feed and leaving the cob, after a few days the bottom of the stuffer would be just ground cob. I switched to grinding the eared corn through a 1/2 inch screen instead of a 3/4 inch to grind it fine enough where they couldn't sort out the cob. I use a Artsway grinder and idle the tractor right down when dumping the shelled corn in so it doesn't grind it as fine. When I run out of eared corn I run some hay through the grinder and mix it in with the shelled corn. Not saying my way is the right way just saying that's how I do it and I'm satisfied with the results as well as all my freezer beef customer's.
