Bought an older Polaris ATV about 2 years ago from a dealer that got it as a trade in from farmer. Was used for farm use so no registration or title or anything existing. 

Now I'm thinking I'd like to use it on some trails or for frozen lakes so I need DNR reg sticker on it. Here's what the site says since it's not a dealer selling a vehicle that REQUIRES registration which would be different of course. I'm just confused what's needed since it's over 20 years old and has no registration or title. Go in with bill of sale and VIN? 

Purchase by private sale:  The purchaser of a machine with a valid registration may operate it for 30 days immediately following the purchase without having completed a transfer of registration. If the registration is expired, the machine must be registered prior to operating the machine in areas where a registration is required.
