I was thinking the same thing. If only 80 acres total are being watered, the cost of a diesel power unit or genset would be less than getting power there. By the time you add up all the meter charges and standby charges it might not be all that advantageous to go electric. I have a 60 acre pivot, and am 120 feet to water. I can give those 60 acres over 8 inches of water with 1000 gallons of diesel. If he is watering 80 acres 5-6 inches, I would assume it to be about the same. This is with a diesel power unit powering both the pump and the pivot structure itself with a generator run off the power unit.

With any kind of care, a power unit should last 25+ years in those conditions.

As to the pivots, I would say a decent used one all the way. Valley has an advantage that an 8000 series Valley has been in production for many years, and any parts off the new ones will fit the old ones. The gearboxes, drive motors, or tower boxes may have been updated over the years, but the new stuff will fit on an 8000 of any age. If you are running 2 pivots off one well/pump, if one goes down, you can switch to the other one and still water as the first one gets fixed.
