My sons jd mechanic was adamant about leaving breaking oil in long enough and to work it hard. We put the 8410 on the chopper and broke it in there and now will go to mobile 1300.

Yep, good advice.

To the OP. Whether you use Schaffer oil, or whatever you consider a premium oil vs "regular" oil like Shell Rotella, etc., for sure don't put anything "premium" in until you are sure your engine is broke in properly.

JD mechanics always stressed not using JD Plus 50 oil (premium oil) in a new overhaul until the engine was broke in. We ALWAYS use JD break-in oil for the first 100 hours, then change to whatever oil we plan to use. Unless the engine is still using a little oil, (not broke in properly) then JD recommends using break-in oil for another 100 hours.

Our standard procedure for overhauled engines is to put in a cheap 10W30 gasoline engine oil (or similiar) and run the engine for 2 hours, then drain. This is to help flush out any potential dirt that may have gotten in during the overhaul. Then go to JD break-in oil for 100 hours. Then go from there with either another round of break-in oil for 100 hours, or go to our normal oil, as I mentioned above.

This is what we do with ag engines, and I would probably do similar for an older truck engine like a 12.7 Detroit.
