Subject: RE: My gripe about restaurants

NW Iowa
My wife and I rarely go out to eat at a full restaurant but when we do go out I rarely see lazy waitresses. Maybe we happen to live in a part of the country that has a good work ethic? We always leave a good tip.

When I was on the harvest in Idaho our crew of about 25 would come dragging in to our favorite restaurant not too far ahead of 11;00 closing time. We could see the dismayed look on the staff's faces. Once in awhile one of us would leave a tip but it wasn't much. One year on the last night we were there we all pitched in and left a big pile of money on one of the tables. If I remember right I put $50 down and this was a good 20 years ago or more. The next year when we showed up the staff was real friendly to us so we must have left a lasting good impression the year before.

My wife was a waitress during summers when she was in college and then continued as a waitress for a year after she graduated and we were married. She was a real hard worker on her feet all day walking as fast as she could, and every night she would come home about midnight tired and reeking of cigarettes and greasy food. She made good tips for the time, late 1960's and early 70's, a nickel was common maybe a dime, a quarter if the customer had just come in from the bar. She gave one guy from the bar crowd a good hard slap when he couldn't keep his hands at home. That's what they did back then, no charges filed, just a good strong slap. She knew every banker, lawyer and business owner in town and they always treated her well. One of her co-waitresses from way back then just passed away at 89. She was a hard working waitress until probably ten years ago. After she retired she stood on her feet half days handing out free samples at the local super market until just a couple years ago. RIP Loretta
