I understand that. Large groups of pairs you either waste a lot of hay or starve the calves. Cows eat a lot faster than a calf it’s just a matter of physical ability to consume feed.
We have had an open winter here and are still grazing cornstalks calves cannot do that and gain weight. The mature rumen simply has capabilities that a calf does not.
