Yes, bushels do vary from year to year. So, in a poor year your cost of production goes up and in a good year cost of production goes down.

Consider this: You spend some money on something that becomes an expense. Let's say another $15 raise you costs. But lets say you spend $15 and get back $20 worth of extra production. Your cost per bushel has gone down. Was the extra $15 worth it. Yes. It returned $20. Not too bad. Let's say you figure $15 per acre. Was that $15 worth it. You don't know. It's just $15.
