8500 trailer + 18k hoe= 26500lbs total. -20k for trailer axles means you need to be putting 6500lbs on the 550. I would be suspect if you could get that much weight on the tongue safely long term.

We started pulling a 53’ step deck with a beaver tail. Semi gets better mpg then my dually while hauling 3x more bales. Semi can safely stop, pickup is lacking in the brake department. If I have the choice between the step deck or gooseneck I’ll take the step deck every time.


Stopping is the most important IMHO. If you're going with a goose neck, pay the extra and get electric over hydraulic brakes. Electric brakes are junk within a couple of years, especially here if you run them in the winter with road salt.
