Southern Alberta | Hi all, I own a 2008 Tarnell 25+5 gooseneck with tandem dual 10k axles. Use it for hauling hay and equipment. Trailer weight empty around 8500lbs
Here’s what’s confusing to me, this trailer has a tag stating the axle ratings of 10k each and total GVWR of 20,000lbs. My previous gooseneck was the same thing…. Now lots of the new ones I see (precision, diamond c, big Tex, gator) all advertise higher GVWR than what the axles are rated for combined. Eg. 2x10k axles and GVWR of 25,000lbs, 2x12k axles and GVWR of 26,900lbs.
I’m assuming the thought behind it is the weight the trailer transfers on the truck. I pull mine with a 2017 F-550 so I have lots of truck to transfer weight into. (Never felt heavy goosenecks behind srw trucks was a good idea).
Anyone have any explanations behind these ratings? I would imagine if the dot pulls me over they are only going to care about my axle weights regardless of total I have on the trailer? Backhoe weighs around 18k with extra buckets so if I put it closer to front of trailer and my trailer axles scale 20k or under I’d be fine even with a GVWR of 20k?
Thanks!
