SC Minnesota | One spring when 28% prices were through the roof, I put on urea with my pluribus ahead of planting instead of side-dressing. The recommendation was to not go higher than 110 lbs/ac of actual N (240 lbs/ac urea) on our heavy clay loam soils. I applied 90 actual lbs/ac N (195 lbs/ac urea) 2-3 days before planting. The air temps went to 85-90 degrees and 30 mph winds and dried out the top 4-5 inches of soil in the weeks after planting and I had some root burning issues. This is maybe a once in 10 or 15 year event, but it set the corn back and hurt the yields. Adding potash definitely ups the salt load, so take that into consideration as well. | |
