South Central NE | I do wear mine every waking moment. My hearing loss has progressively gotten worse over time. It's to the point where I can see my wife's lips move but hear very little of what she is saying without my hearing aids even if she yells. It is partly genetic and partly farming. I imagine that cochlear implants are in my future. I can converse with most men but women are sometimes a struggle. Crowds can be a problem unless I situate myself in the right place.
I use Bluetooth to converse on the phone which is a big help. But even then I have to ask many of them to speak up. I've noticed that after I request that they comply for a sentence or two and then go back to normal. That's a huge frustration for me.
I first noticed it about 20 years ago when my grandkids were small and I couldn't hear and understand them. At that point I realized I had to do something.
I am getting new hearing aids next week that include AI in their processing. I am looking forward to that. I know many of the Agtalk folks get their aids from Costco or somewhere like that. I can't do that because my hearing loss is so severe. I have about 10% left in my left and 30% left in my right ear. I am totally deaf in certain tones. The new aids will actually compensate for that.
I have heard several times through the years that bad hearing is the only handicap that people will hate you for. I don't necessarily think that's true but there’s certainly a kernel of truth in there. | |
