Just goes to show you that every place is different.

Here, when we stopped doing starter and went to broadcast early pre, our yields went nothing but up.
We grid sampled, went to variable rate broadcasting, to put the fertilizer where it was needed. Get better yields without more fertilizer.

Keep in mind, we have highly variable soils, both in soil type as well as slope/drainage.

ETA: we have had one row plug on our planter starter in the past and on a year with a cold spring you could spot the row with the plugged line. On a year with more moderate soil temperatures, you couldn't.
