Not sure when you are rotary hoeing, but the crown of the corn plant is always 3/4” below the soil surface unless you plant shallower then 3/4”. The main roots are always there. Maybe that planting depth helps with a seedling spike, but I don’t quite follow planting deeper for deeper roots. The roots always try to grow down. I would guess planting at the best depth for fastest plant root development is better than 3”. You may get better rooting depth at 2” because the soil temps promote more growth.
