NE Nebraska | If she's truly interested in starting a business I'd recommend she join the FB group "Accounting and Bookkeeping Tips". The topic of pricing is discussed a great deal.
It's a very active group that has some great info on challenges bookkeepers face in all industries. At the same time, some of the comments/questions people make really make you shake your head as to whether they know what they're doing so you have to filter and study. Like anything, there are pros and cons to the discussions.
Some of the things they talk about include:
-charging for services and how to get paid (believe it or not--some people don't make that a priority)
-making sure to have a scope of service (what you will and won't do, data entry, invoicing, reconciling, 1099's, W-2's, etc)
-charging for clean-up work
-software choices (QBDT, QBO, Xero, Gusto for payroll, cost and preferences)
-bookkeeping variations for sole-proprietor, LLC, C-corp, etc,
-handling various types of transactions and dealing with persons co-mingling personal funds with business
-use of Venmo and Paypal in paying transactions
-converting PDF to QBO files
-getting timely access to info
-liability issues as a bookkeeper & insurance needs/sources
-tax return to balance sheet reconciliation
Another FB group is "Bookkeeping Side Hustle Group". Again--some people in these groups have NO training and just want to create a job for themselves (which is kind of scary for future clients), but it gives the reader an idea of opportunities, pitfalls and challenges in bookkeeping for others and how not to do things in some cases.
A good website resource is Accounting Coach.
From all of the discussions, I'd say it's a good service to offer for both business and possibly elderly who need trustworthy, reliable help with personal finances but just don't want to deal with it.
She could contact a tax preparer or banker to let them she's thinking of offering the service and to gauge the need. They could possibly help with marketing her service by letting potential clients know of her availability.
