No kidding. Softener or no, everyone I've ever talked to, including myself, have had to replace the water heater within a year after screwing with it. Know of a few that did last 5 years after replacing the bottom element, but they only let the water flush through the drain valve for 10 minutes or so, and then put it back to work. One thing I have thought about is replacing the anode rod. Maybe the rod only lasts about 10 years, and then when we rile everything up there's no anode to protect the tank?
To the OP. Leave it alone unless you want to replace it. And if you replace it, get one of these.
