Subject: Tobacco, alcohol, and Weed, anyone care to explain?

North Central US
The last 40 or 50 years has been spent proving and discouraging against the use of any form of tobacco, as all forms cause some type of cancer, especially smoking.

Alcohol is now to the point where tobacco was 50 years ago, studies, soon to be warning labels, mass campaigns about don't drink and drive, etc.

Now the last 20 years, smoking weed has been encouraged, and new forms of consumption have been made for it, and encouraged.

Do we seriously have to wait another 50 years for a study to come out that smoking is bad? Consumption of another mind altering plant probably will cause problems, especially on the long term and driving parts?

Why are two that have similar effects to the other greatly discouraged and have a stigma around them, while the other doesn't?
