oregon | We had several 5 and 4s behind Chevy 366 and 426 gas engines and IH 446 gas and Fords also. In the field we would put the Brownie in 1 and main in 1 or 2 for spuds. Sometimes the Brownie in 2 and main in 1. Brownie in 2 on the dirt roads. Brownie in 3 (direct) and use the main on the level paved roads. Once up to speed in Brownie 3 and main in 5, it was easy to shift from 3 to 4 Brownie: clutch, shift to N and pause a moment and then to 4.
That was my way as I was not good at split shifting. I had a neighbor who could split shift in the field in soft dirt and never miss a shift. He drove for me a few seasons after he retired. | |
