NW Ohio, near Findlay | the ones I drove, which were many. Standard 5 speed in front. 1st, non sync, 2 thru 5 sync.
The Browning 4 speed, all gears non sync. Low was really low, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, even gear jumps.
Ninety per cent of the time you always started out is 2nd on the main, 2nd on the aux 4 speed. Then go to 3rd, 4th, and 5th on the main, then, go 3rd, small jump in gear ratio, then 4th on the rear aux. These trucks were all tri axle dump trucks, with Detroit Diesel, Two strokers. You had to have gears in them, no low end torque, had to shift lots.
I liked the 5 and 4 speeds. You easily matched the shifting speeds with the throttle, nothing to it.
The ones we had the aux tranny in 3rd was a direct, and the 4th was a Overdrive, basically had any gear you needed, especially low end in fields. It wasn't any worse than driving a Mack with a tri-plex two sticker. | |
