I don't know but our ancient dairy calf barn is a joke by modern standards. Every vet and cattle expert that sees it condemns the poor ventilation (actually quite good), backwards conditions, dry cows in the same barn, etc. etc. About 50 heifers are born and raised there each year and 50 bulls for a short time. They shut up when I tell them I lost 1 calf in 10 years. They never ask how or why. It doesn't fit their preconceived college sheep skin therefore it cannot be.
As far as I can tell this is why:
1. Raised and sloped stalls with rubber cowmat floor bedded knee deep with long oats straw for baby calves.
2. Coziest place on earth when it is -40 degrees. Many are brainwashed that cold doesn't matter and they are wrong. Very cold temperatures are very hard on calves and receive very little study.
3. They are fed cow's milk the first month. This is big. Milk replacer is a joke for baby calves.
4. The guy raising them.
Like many things there is the science, but many times the art overrides it for some reason, good operator can make up for many deficiencies. |
