Eastern NE KS | In past years I used a similar setup. In the evening I would move the heaviest heifer to a 10x12' pen for the night. Most girls learned to enjoy the clean fresh bedding (processed prairie hay). If I had too many heifers looking like the same calving status I had to start earlier. It was fun to see the girls find the barn pleasant and preferred for the night after few trial stays with nervous pacing.
Once they settled in, calving was usually quiet affair. Biggest negative is the extra chores in the barn just to calm first calf heifers over bring them in as they calve. | |
