| Bought a group of heifers this fall that are going to calve a little earlier than I’d like. Starting February 10th for 60 days.
I’ve been seeing a lot of talk of a cold and snowy January/Febuary in MI so I’m getting a little nervous.
They will be penned up close and brought indoors to an individual pen after calving, no heat but out of the wind and plenty of bedding.
Current plan is to hold pairs indoors for a day or so post calving and then turn them out to a small pasture with a barn attached. Planning to hold them here for a week, or as long as there is room, and then kick out to a larger pasture with tall grass and some woods. There will be a couple bedded calf shelters here too but nothing as substantial..
Does this sound like decent plan? Would you worry much about a week old calf out on pasture, with some shelter in some potential single digit temps and snow?
Appreciate any thoughts/advice. | |
