We used to have them sawed out as they are most rot resistant .Used them anywhere moisture was an issue.Only used a few for posts.A tree disease here took out most Hackmatack (same tree diff name here)in the local counties.If I was going to use as post I would peel the butt and hit it with used oil or such.W have almost constant wet soils and they last well.
