| My wife and I fit your target of starting with nothing. We now farm pretty big with two sons and a son in law. The third generation is just beginning to help out a bit here and there. My wife and I struggled a lot starting out and our kids struggled along with us. In example helping load hogs before school then taking a shower and hoping no one smelled the hogs on them. Which they did and it kind of hurt our kids to be teased a bit, but they are tremendous men and women now. And I think I’m together with them in thinking the third generation should struggle some also. Do I want my grandkids working sick cattle below zero, or feeding every day on a tractor without a cab, no. Maybe they spend their high school evenings washing equipment or soil sampling. But will we buy them new king ranch? Heck no. But neither am I going to make them so miserable they don’t want to join the farm. If they grow up to be great humans and raise great families I’d hope no one would ever consider them spoiled brats because they helped build a tremendous family business. | |
