My question is for first generation farmers that truly started on their own with minimal help from family or an employer that helped you get a leg up in some way. What do you plan to do with the operation when you are ready to retire? I would venture to guess that the vast majority are planning on or at least hoping to pass the operation on to the next generation. If so how many generations does it take before your descendants are considered the privileged spoiled brats that didn’t earn it?
I get what you are saying I think. There are those that rail against generational farms that then in turn want to make their farm into a generational farm. Kind of rubs me the wrong way and seems hypocritical when they dengrate someone just because their father or grandfather sought to build something to carry on after them. I think the next generation should be challenged so they don't get soft or arrogant and just live off the previous generations. But that probably just makes it harder for new entrants if the down generations are good managers and are increasing to make room for their next generation.
Many agtalkers seem to think that anyone that started with anything more than them are privelidged spoiled brats not capable of earning anything.
