Eastern NE KS | A smaller cow herd is nothing new. Almost all cattle cycles over the last 50 years has resulted in a 1-3 million cow smaller number of cows. This is measured from one cycle peak to the next. So that's is how the cow numbers go but my point is this:
We still experience unsustainable low prices following a meager herd rebuild. This is at least partly driven by ever larger carcass weights that sustain and finally overwhelm the beef demand. Hence the new round of low domestic prices.
I fundamentally understand a drought stricken ranch that needs to rebuild its herd or at least begin the rebuild. But I believe we are on the cusp of overdone exuberance. In addition, I will handle my next calf crop and resulting replacement numbers very carefully. Next fall could easily be the most profitable point in those young heifers lives.
