Subject: RE: Getting into feeders

The Coop morning coffee crowd might shoot me for this but yes you can definitely make it in the custom feeding side of things. I know everyone and their brother will tell you there is no money in it, but also the same guys have been doing it for years. We have so many feedlots here in eastern Colorado big and small. A good chunk of them are all custom feeders for local and regional ranchers here. One of the keys to making it work is cheap land and cheap feed.

For a smaller example, My neighbor is just a little guy. He feeds maybe 50 head of steers and maybe 350 lambs a year. He does some cow calf stuff on the side. Seams like his feed tractors are just as nice as any around. I do feel there is more actual “net” in the cow-calf and lambing side of things. But like Iv said custom feeding is a hell of a business here.

Half the battle is mentally getting past the 3-4 generation operations telling you there is no money in it and you can’t do it. What Iv found is More times then not they just don’t want the extra competition for ground when it comes up.
