The iron builds up like jelly in the pump, pipe, and fittings. Some guys claimed they could keep it at bay with a chlorinator.
Others would feed a piece of 1/2" PVC down through the spool and pour a gallon of Hylex down every month, let it sit overnight and run a hydrant for an hour to flush things out. It's nasty stuff, seems to be organic in a way because it's like it grows.
