It's been a while since I installed a printer. If I remember correctly, you install the software before you connect the printer. Did you get software when you bought the printer? Do you need to download software from a website?  If you haven't done it this way, I would disconnect the printer, install the software, then connect the printer when it tells you to do so.  See if that helps.
