south central WI | Yes, I like to have the doors open when it's 20° and above, when it's colder than that I close them so the manure doesn't freeze and the cattle are a little warmer. Freezing really isn't an issue until closer to zero, the cattle keep the barn quite a bit warmer.
Our newest barn has an overshot roof like in that picture above. It works really well. It keeps rain and snow out, and it had a curtain that can be raised or closed depending on the outside temp. Our older barns have bird netting and an open ridge which let's rain in, and also tends to freeze up when cold, which I guess does the same thing. | |
