Maybe/maybe not, some cow vets are a whole lot better than others. Since I know you are playing devil's advocate with me in particular, let's just say this, buying calves like he is doing is like playing with a loaded gun, some people are cautious, some shoot themselves in the foot. Not picking on him, but I see plenty of blame there. If he's talked to other folks with mixed experiences and the vet has an autogenous (not sure I'm believing an autogenous for just one salebarn) I would approach with extreme caution. That being said, in Wisc, I would think lots of small groups from a whole lot of different environments is a recipe for exactly the results he is seeing
