I have thought about asking him and grandma if we could have a talk about the future of the farm.
Do this asap! If he's 85 and been farming most of his life be prepared for him to throw all the bad "what if's" at you because he's lived the bad times too. I think everybody in his position would like to see their kids/grand kids take over an operation like that but they know the downsides too and don't want to set a family member up to fail. So develop a plan for when basically everything goes wrong.
You and your brother NEED to have this conversation YESTERDAY, from your long explanatory post I would bet Grandpa is waiting for this, you should have enough base there to make a go of it for both of you if you can get some cash flow developed by doing some direct marketing or high value crops such as vegetables or fruits, milking goats etc. You will need to watch your P & Q's, search for value and not get too much invested in the latest and the greatest tech. or equipment until you get it rolling. If you and your brother can work together even if you can you need to have a plan in case there ever comes a point where you cannot, however that looks, whether one has to or wants to walk away or if you can split the operation into 2 viable operations. Some will say I am wrong, but remember that at some point one or both of you may bring a wife into the situation and that can really cause issues. From where I sit these farm in order to stay in the family needs to skip a generation, nothing against your dad and uncle, but they are not equipped to make this work and I think your Grandpa knows this, does not make them bad people just leaves things in an unfortunate place. Wish you the best, it will not be easy, but you seem to have what it takes from what I see here.
Edit: additional thought, there needs to be a darn good attorney involved very soon if Grandpa is willing, from the tone of your statements, unless I read this wrong Grandpa knows it.
