I worked for 40 year old man when I was 18. He and his father had switched from milking to beef. His father suddenly died and he was left on his own. I will never forget his words. "Dan, don't ever do that to your son, because his dad had made all the decisions and he did not know what to do". The cattle are a separate issue from who is making all the decisions. Your dad and uncle need to have a hard conversation with your grandpa. I am a soon to be 75 year old dad and grandpa. I am far from perfect but I must realize that my son is in his prime and let and encourage him to manage. Others have encouraged you to branch out to do something on your own. Do that for a while and you then will see how things turn out at home. Don't burn your bridges though. The best years are ahead for you, keep your head up.
Told a neighbor about this thread, he reminded me there is nothing worse then a 40 year old man making his first business decision, because dad died suddenly and now it is his baby, I took over the dairy operation after working out 8-9 years and also doing the milking for dad, there were some tense moments while we both learned and adapted to our new roles, but in the end it worked out reasonably well for both for us, not the way dad maybe wanted 100%, but he understood and was fine with the outcome, as the next generation comes of age he may get a variation his vision realized yet, only time will tell. | |
