| I think it’s good that you’ve identified many problems and are seeking advice already at 18. It seems you are in a situation many farmers find themselves in when being part of a generational operation. Unfortunately many wait until they’ve most of their best years working before they ask the pertinent questions. The best thing is that at your age you have plenty of options. As others have said it may be necessary to leave the farm for a time to develop other skills/ education. I was in a similar situation at your age and forces beyond my control forced me to leave the farm. It was difficult at first and it caused me to be somewhat bitter about the situation. Looking back it was probably a blessing. I’m relatively sure I would have been nothing more than a hired hand with empty promises about someday taking over. Now Im in my late 50’s with money in the bank and a great retirement plan. I farm on a limited basis and its enough to scratch the farming itch for me. If you decide to stay I think raising dairy heifers may be your niche or providing other services to the other dairys in your area. | |
