central Virginia | I'm going to take the stance that the 85 year old must have known what he was doing to still be farming at 85. I'm also going to assume your father's generation is in the 55-65 range. The middle generation never "showed" their father they could run the place. A man that is 85 is never going to be convinced verbally you can handle the operation. If 3 generations were to be living off this operation the most likely cash flow stream to make that happen is gone.
400 cows is not a hobby farm. You're location among larger dairies let's me know the location didn't force the family out of dairy. Vendors, nutritionist, vets, processor are in the area because of the larger dairies. Why was the dairy shut down?
The operation You're currently involved with is a 2 man show and one of those guys is an employee.
Edit--- just wanted to add we are a 4th generation dairy. Some generations are able to hand off responsibilities better than others. .
Good luck
You will be an employee until you are 55 if you're lucky. If that isn't what you want move along.
