Back when we had dairy cows, in a stanchion barn, we let them out every day in the winter for an hour or two while we cleaned the trenches and put fresh bedding down. The only exception was for one or two really cold days. My dad told the story often of the dairy across the road that left the cows stanchion tied all winter and the calving problems they put up with, until they started letting them out for a little exercise daily. Not only did they have to pull calves, but a lot of them came breech, even with mature cows. | |
