Southeast WI | My planting into covers regimen for corn:
(1) Adaptive mgt: Follow the weather trends - if it's dry and trending dry KILL the cover well before planting. If it's wet and looks to con't wet or better than normal rain I will plant green and terminate covers immed after planting. Really do not want cereal rye >15" tall.
(2) Nitrogen: Minimum of 45 units of N indexed to the row for easy access for the corn
(3) Starter: The cover eats first. First released nutrients in Spring are sucked up by the cover crop. I do not want the corn to be short macro nutrients - 170 lbs 4-10-10 applied 2x2
(4) Sulfur: Long term farms get 30 lbs/A Elemental-S every fall. That appears to give adequate release of S for the year. Do not see S deficiency. Newly rented ground will get Elemental plus 3 gal ATS with planter N for a few years
(5) Rye planting rate: avg 40 lbs/acre planting in early/mid Oct through end of Nov - SE WI. You can't compare vol. rye or rye planted early in the year to this type of planting after soybeans or corn. Early plant will give tremendous Fall growth and Spring growth. Early plant covers must be killed v. early in the corn planting year as they are too lush and thick and will suppress corn yield
(6) More advice? I'm sure I forgot something - below are my 2024 and a few different looks at some long-term data
Edit to say there has to be a better way to attach files - taking pics and posting jpgs is kinda poor, saving files as jpgs does not work with readable results, can't post excel or word pages.... Hope these are somewhat legible.
