Subject: RE: Kinze Repower (Deere 8430-8850)

Michigan
I’ve had a 8640, 8560, 8570, 8870, 9520, Case IH 480 Quadtrac, New Holland T9.530 and T9.700. Under no circumstance would I ever recommend a original 30, 40, or 50 series John Deere, my 8640 was mint with under 4,000 hrs when I bought it and I thought it should be fine… the engine cracked the block/head and after a $25,000 engine reman saga I dumped it for $6,500. They were such a nice machine to run but when the engine goes it’s a disaster. The problem is the engine block is the backbone of the front frame as you probably know. The Kinze rebuild was a front frame that the engine sits in to take the stress off the engine block. Although the engines aren’t perfect the main problem was no frame and the block took all the twisting. The 60 series on up is a frame that the engine sits in on rubber mounts. Much easier to work on. As far as electronics I mean they aren’t much more complicated than a 1990 pickup truck. 8960 would be an excellent choice and would have your 855 Cummins. 855 Cummins is a proven good engine but they can all fail.
The Steigers are a nice machine. I think they are simpler and the axles I believe have less issues than the Deere. The Gudgeon or pivot area of the steigers is much simpler and works great. I bet you can get a STX Case just as reasonably as a 60 or 70 series Deere and I think they are a better machine. As you can see we depend on the Steigers now and I don’t really see going back to the Deeres for the money. I also have a Deere 787 pull between cart on an air drill and run it with the 8560 no problem. My 8560 is for sale as it’s too small now for us.
