Subject: Something That Needs to Be Understood

Northern Indiana
Our public schools are no longer places of academic learning. They are experimentation labs for politicians, social engineers, and the latest educational trends or fads that come down the pike. Schools now do more public relations work than ever before, and the administrative backbone has long since been removed. The board and the supts. are afraid of the parents, and they can't make a move against a teacher without a huge fight to do so. The teachers are afraid of parents (they have good reason to be). Parents are afraid of their kids. Here's the problem: our kids today aren't afraid of anybody! They have learned from the time they got put into daycare to ignore authority, argue with everyone around them, and get away with as much as possible. If they get into trouble at school, they get bailed out. If they aren't doing their homework. parents try to get them excused from it. If they're working and don't bother to study, parents get mad if they are called on it. If a coach or teacher dare sets a boundary with a kid in sports, parents/administrators come unglued. Handbooks get handed out to students - no cell phones, no Ipods, etc, etc. They still come to school with them and use them. Why? Because the parents didn't check their bags before they left; when they got to school the fact that they had them was ignored. This situation in Rhode Island should serve as a wake-up call to this nation. Do we really want to straighten out our schools? Then first and foremost, straighten out yourselves. Put your homes in order and get engaged into your kids' lives. Then, go and apologize to the last education personnel you argued with or got smart with because of something your angel couldn't have possibly done. Believe me, they did it, and it was probably more than what has been reported. The only way our schools will ever have any chance for success again in this country is for everyone to take a stand and demand that things change. It may take something as drastic as clearing out an entire school's staff and starting over.
