Well for starters I would get at least two other bids. Specialized Kitchen and bath contractors tend to be high. A good local general contractor will have basic knowledge and have a good working relationship with different specialists. We remodeled our old house in 1994. This is a family house and I love it dearly but if I had it to do over again I would build new. Our situation was a little different. We were just starting a family and money was kind of tight. In your situation you now have 2400 square feet and the kids are leaving home. If I were in your shoes I would build a nice one story 1600 square foot house with a nice two and a half car garage and an attic for storage above the garage. When you get done it will be laid out the way you want it will be nice and tight and everything will be brand new. I like our house but when all is said and done it is still an old house. Unless this house has some serious family history I would knock it down and start over. Good luck with whatever you decide.
