Potassium can Leach. Potassium chloride is water soluble so by definition and by design it will move rather quickly with water. If that water is running off or going out tile lines there's a chance some of your potassium dollars could go with it

In low CEC soil potassium is going to move more. And in Sandy soils potassium management in season can be a much better bang for the buck then one application ahead of the planter and especially the previous fall

Vermiculite clay doesn't hold the potassium as hard as the other type of clay and the natural wedding and drying of that clay will release potassium making it available. That also makes it susceptible to leaching

Over applications is very common and a great way to set up the potential of potassium leaching
